explosions

so i'm sleeping peacefully, and suddenly there's a BOOM that shakes the room.  i'm awake.  at first i don't register what it is.  i just know i'm awake, and for some reason, shaken.  i look at my phone.  it's 445am.  then it happens again.  it sounds and feels like it's RIGHT UNDER THE BED.  and then it happens again, this time further away.  i am now wide awake and suddenly realize that i've been counting and it's been like 20 or so explosions, near and far.  i get up and look outside, expecting to see flames, hoping to see fireworks in the sky (diwali is DEFINITELY over, but ... you know ... it's india ...), and since i'm now hearing strange wailing noises, i have a moment of fearing for the worst.  there is nothing out of the ordinary in my window, and eventually i drift back to bed and am back asleep about an hour later.

turns out there was a full moon last night, and people around here go NUTTY.  they let off very huge, bomb-sounding exploding devices for full moon.  apparently some of them also wail and scream.

i should have known.

on a completely different subject, i would like to say again that we have made some fantastic friends here.  we had a few over tonight for take-out, drinks, and what was supposed to be board games.  we played one game.  it was the roxanne drinking game.  YEESH.  ever played it?  you should try it.  play the police's 'roxanne' loud.  one team drinks every time 'roxanne' is mentioned, the other team drinks for 'red light.'  it's a doozy!  ... you can also play it alone, right had drinks for 'roxanne'... left for 'red light', although i wouldn't advise it.
